Try these tonight

Three drills you can start in the next five minutes.

Real methods from the book. Documented nowhere else on the internet. The full progressions, mistakes to avoid, and demo videos live inside.

01

The Gravity Flick

The drill nobody has ever taught

Lie flat on your back and snap the disc straight up with pure finger-push and wrist-snap. Gravity brings it right back. Your arm can't cheat — so you build the exact flick mechanics, one rep at a time.

Try it now50 reps lying down, then stand up and throw a flick at a wall 15 feet away. Feel the transfer.

The full progression to 300 reps, both hands, and the demo video are in the book.

02

Hula Hoop Forever

Five minutes that change everything

Spin a disc on your finger like a basketball. Keep it going, switch fingers, switch hands. It builds the finger strength and spin intuition that power every throw and catch you'll ever make.

Try it nowFive minutes while you watch TV. Get it spinning on your off hand — that's where the real gains hide.

The full off-hand routine and the freestyle path it unlocks are in the book.

03

The Double Helix Pull

Ten to twenty extra yards

Most players step and throw their pull. Spin your entire body through a full 360, like a discus thrower, and channel that rotation through the whole kinetic chain. The disc is just along for the ride.

Try it nowStart slow, build speed over 10–20 attempts. You'll feel the extra distance click into place.

The full mechanics and the kinetic-chain breakdown are in the book.

The right disc changes everything

The bridge tools even the pros miss.

When I interviewed a 2× MVP for the book, he'd never heard of the Soft UltraStar. Here's the gear that turns beginners and kids into players.

Soft UltraStar disc
🥏

Soft UltraStar

The one everyone should own

Same 175g size and weight as the tournament disc — but it won't sting your fingers or scuff on concrete. Practice skip throws off pavement without fear. Build tournament-ready muscle memory from day one.

The Beamo disc

The Beamo

The perfect first disc for kids

A huge, soft foam ring — the only disc that bounces. Impossible to miss, safe for the youngest hands, and it finally lets a kid throw with all their might. Where the love of the sport starts.

The Dodgebee disc

The Dodgebee

Throw it at a face, they laugh

Super-soft, foam-and-nylon, flies true. Perfect for one-handed catch practice and disc tag on the playground. Secretly teaches the backhand, the hammer, and fearless throwing all at once.

What's inside

A complete solo training system. No partner, no wifi, no excuses.

  • 40+ solo drills — from first touch to Legend-tier ambidextrous strikes
  • Every throw — backhand, flick, hammer, scoober, thumber, and more
  • QR codes to demo videos — scan and watch the exact motion on the field
  • The kinetic chain, decoded — the science of why your disc flies
  • Body training — strength, cutting, and the engine behind your throws

Chapters · 40+ drills

Every chapter polished into one program you can take straight to the field. That cover? It's the inverted Hula Hoop Drill — one of the hardest skills in the book.

Coming next

The flick forehand, accelerated.

I'm actively researching how to develop and speed up the flick faster than anyone thought possible. It's the subject of my next book. This site is where you'll hear about it first.

Jonathon Lunardi refereeing for the DC Breeze
Who wrote this

A practitioner, a player, a coach, and a ref.

This isn't written from the sidelines. It's built from twenty years of throwing, catching, and cutting on fields across the DC area — from every angle the sport has.

  • UFA referee for the DC Breeze. I officiate the pros. I know the rules cold and I watch elite mechanics up close, every game.
  • Member of the GGM Black Cans. I still compete at the national level against the best in my division.
  • WAFC youth coach. I've taught many kids from zero — I know how the skills actually get learned.
  • 20 years of pickup & 10+ hat tournaments. I organize pickup games in the DC area and I'm deep in this community.

The book — and the future of this site — is built on knowing this sport from every angle there is.

Who is building this

I'm Jonathon.

I grew up in Oklahoma playing football, basketball, and soccer. I never heard the words "Ultimate Frisbee" until I was 28.

Now I referee the pros as a UFA official for the DC Breeze. I play for the GGM Black Cans, one of the best great grand masters teams in the country. I coach kids through WAFC. And for twenty years I've organized pickup games and played hat tournaments all over the DC area.

Twenty years in, this sport has given me more than any other ever did. And almost nobody I grew up with has any idea it exists.

I bought UltimateFrisbee.com because nobody had built the place this sport deserves. I want to fix that — with help from every player, coach, parent, organizer, and curious person who has an opinion about what it should be.

What I want to build

Three ideas at the heart of it.

01

The 80% Problem

Who this is really for

Every major Ultimate organization serves the players who already love the sport. The other 80% — the curious, the former player, the disc-golfer, the soccer parent, the kid in Tulsa whose school doesn't know Ultimate exists — has nowhere to go. UltimateFrisbee.com will be for them first.

02

The Belt System

A path, not a guess

Ultimate has no progression structure. You pick it up at pickup and either get good or you don't. We're going to change that with a tiered learning path — the way martial arts teach a kid to throw a punch.

03

The Double Helix Pull

Names for things that never had them

A pulling technique I developed that adds ten to twenty yards of distance with the same effort. Never documented anywhere. We'll document it here — with video, with diagrams, with names for things that have never had names.

Ideas already on the table

What this site could become.

Spark Map

Every curious player on a global map, so people in rural areas can find each other and start something new.

Coach Marketplace

Hire experienced players for one-on-one training. Ratings, reviews, scheduling, payments built in.

Crossover Sport Pages

How soccer, basketball, lacrosse, and tennis skills translate to Ultimate. For athletes who don't know yet.

Local Team Map

Every team in your area, from middle school to pro. Recent games, schedules, how to find them.

AI Rules Mentor

Ask a chatbot any rule question, in any language, with video examples of common calls.

Tossing Partner Finder

Match with one disc-curious person within 10 miles. You don't need a pickup game. You need somebody.

School Disc Donation

Every disc sold funds a disc to a school of the buyer's choice. A public dashboard tracks the impact.

Belt Progression

Track your throws, drills, and skills through a structured progression. Beginner to Legend.

Help build what's next

What should UltimateFrisbee.com become?

I own the home of the sport online, and I'm deciding what to build here. Whether you've played for twenty years or never thrown a disc — tell me your idea. I read every one.

SMSGO A tool I built for exactly this · Patent pending

Starting your own pickup group? Get the game to actually happen.

The hardest part of Ultimate has nothing to do with throwing: it's getting enough people to show up — especially when the weather's questionable and everyone's waiting to see if anyone else commits. My own Silver Spring games went dark for three years over exactly this. So I built SMSGO to fix it. You set the number it takes to play. Everyone replies YES or NO by text (or email — their choice). The second you hit your number, SMSGO fires "It's ON!" to the whole crew automatically. No app, no group chat, no guessing.

Beats questionable weather

Nobody wants to drive to the field unsure if a game will make. The threshold means people commit early and everyone shows up confident — rain or shine.

🥏

Built for Ultimate first

Silver Spring Ultimate has played 42 games this season — one every week since March. This is the exact tool that resurrected those games from three years dead.

💸

$5 to try, pay as you go

Five dollars gets you about 166 texts. No subscription, no auto-renewal. If your group goes quiet, you pay nothing. Email replies cost a tenth of a text.

SMSGO

We use SMSGO for our own local pickup coordination every single week — and have for many months. It's how our games actually happen. If it works for us, it'll work for your group. Read the story →
